History

The network ASSITEJ International was established in 1965 and the representatives from SFRY, which was one of its founding members, enthusiastically participated in its activities. During the nineties, due to the breakup of Yugoslavia and the sanctions, the country was barred from the membership. In 2003, the cofounders decided to establish the national ASSITEJ centre of Serbia and Montenegro. On 24th March, 2003, the centre was recognized by ASSITEJ International and granted the official membership. After Montenegro declared its independence in 2008, the centre continued its activities under the name ASSITEJ Serbia, the association for development of theatre for children and young people.
